Elle Belle's Bows {and Giveaway}

"Soon after seeing our little girl on the sonogram, I fell in love with hair bows and clips.  The probability of having a girls set me off in every directions that was pink and frilly.  I eyed many specialty stores and surfed he internet for them.  I had a bow in mind for every holiday, milestone, and special occasion.  Then my beautiful Ella came in to our world with just the slightest bit of peach fuzz for hair.  She was an early December baby.  By the time Christmas arrived, my hopes of "garnishing" her with fancy schmancy bows flew off with Santa and his reindeer.  She was a fill fledged baldie!  I found a bit of solace in hats, bit did not feel the same.  I explored headbands, but the new mom in worried about her soft spot.  I know..... Crazy Right?  About the time she hit three months, I found crocheted headbands and easily got over  the fear.  The crochet headbands were perfect.  They were soft for Ella and they allowed me the luxury of being able to clip a hair bow to the headband.  I was now back to being hooked again.  However, I found that I could not always find what I needed.  I dabbled here and there with making my own.  Then, Ella finally got hair and I discover ribbon sculpting.  Ella was starting to talk and develop interests.  So, I started to make bows in the shape of animals or characters that were familiar to her.  It is a trifecta of accomplishments in my mind.  Ella get cool bows/clips.  I get to satisfy my desire to have everything coordinate to a theme.  And it is a great way to occupy my time on the evenings that my husband is out of town.

My inspiration for the bracelet was a flower wrist corsage.  There are so many ways to decorate this bracelet.  In this tutorial I will show you the basic steps and a few of my ideas.

Flower gift: Kusudama Flower Tutorial

Click the image to open in full size.

Here is a very helpful tutorial that I used in making my own Kusudama flowers
The Japanese word kusudama comes from two Japanese words kusuri (Medicine) and tama (Ball) They were often used with incense of potpourri. These days they are used more as decorative gifts.

Kusudama origami flowers are generally assembled into a large spherical shape. In today’s lesson we will be making a single flower. If you make another 11 of these, you can assemble them into a traditional kusudama ball. The flowers that make up the kusudama are beautiful in their own right. I was recently commissioned to fold over 200 of these flowers for the Honda stand at the Melbourne motor show. The flowers proved so popular that by the second day of the 14 day event a security guard was required to stop them all from disappearing even thought they were behind a persex shield. Thankfully they are fairly simple to make and I had help from a very good friend making replacements.

Recycling paper: Ruffled Lotus Lantern

This latest flower project was inspired by stories from my friend Erika, who briefly lived in Seoul Korea about ten years ago. Apparently, every May, the good people of South Korea celebrate Buddah’s birthday with the Lotus Lantern Festival, a time when everyone in town decks the streets with thousands of beautiful paper lanterns. They make them out of paper cups and tissue paper, then hang them from trees and fence posts and exchange them with strangers. Doesn’t that sound wonderful? Can you imagine a whole giant city lit up with paper lanterns? Man, I got to get to South Korea in the Springtime!

Anniversary paper: Autumn Leaves Tutorial

The invitations came decorated with miniature maple leaf embellishments so in keeping with the theme, I'm thinking of Fall foliage.

The biggest problem with that line of thinking is that while the Midwest abounds with colorful leaves and the warm hues of the season, the Mediterranean is nearly without seasons and doesn't have those nice North American maples, oaks, pines and so on. So how do I get my hands on some genuine Fall efflorescence.

Here's the process.
